Kindergarten
Kindergarten children have a natural love of art and the creative process. In the kindergarten art program we foster the creative spirit of each child, providing a safe environment where problem solving, imagination and self-esteem can flourish. We encourage unique, individual expression so the kindergarten child who naturally likes to copy can grow comfortable and confident following their own voice. Fine motor skills are continuing to develop and improve. Children are comfortable sharing their ideas and asking questions as we make observations about the art that inspires us – learning to see and developing our perceptive abilities. Students learn to identify the elements of design- line, color, shape/form, texture, value and space in the environment and in works of art. Children are also introduced to these principles of design – pattern, rhythm, and variation and learn to also identify these in the environment and works of art. Our projects are inspired by the kindergarten curriculum, art history, contemporary artists and art from around the world. Each child’s skills grow and develop naturally as they have fun experimenting with drawing, painting, mixed media, printmaking, sculpture and puppetry.

Branching-Line Tree PainingsAs the kindergartenn studies trees we make observations from nature about the variety of branching lines (bursting, drooping, straight, wavy, diagonal, horizontal, vertical) we see in the many different trees. Students work collaboratively to create giant winter trees for the winter Solstice concert. They start wth the branching lines of the tree and then add layers of pine needles, leaves, snow and ornaments.
Artists and Art History, Past and Present
Radial Design Sunflower Still-LifeWe make observations about radiall designs in works of art, nature and the environment. A close look is taken at Vincent Van Gogh's paintings and especially his sunflower paintings noticing that these flowers are a radial design. We discuss how warm and cool colors can be used to create contrast and how we can blend chalk pastels to mix colors with our fingers.
Art from Around the World
Carmen Lomas Garza Paintings
We made observations about paintings of celebrations by Latino Artist Carmen Lomas Garza and a child’s embroidered Chinese hat and Indian costume used in a celebration. Then we brainstormed all of the celebrations we could think of. Using a variety of lines and color we created drawings and paintings of our own celebrations.
Paper Mache Puppets
We make observations about puppets from around the world. Children make the puppet head out of recycled materials and paper mache it. We look at pictures of animals with repetitive patterns. Next they mix the primary colors to make the secondary colors. Then they mix tints by adding white to a color and shades by adding black. After painting their puppet heads they choose fabric, stitch and embellish their puppet body.
