Middle Music

Middle school students have music class twice a week, based on Orff Schulwerk, an internationally recognized approach to music and movement education. By working primarily in groups, students learn active music making -- exploration, imitation, improvisation and creation.

Students also build the foundation for future musical development through music games and dance, singing technique and active listening.

Each year, specific activities are highlighted in the Middle School music program:

  • Third grade performs an original musical based on Japanese or African folk tales.
  • Fourth grade presents Fiesta, an evening family celebration of music, dance and food from Latin America.
  • Fifth grade incorporates their social studies curriculum by learning about and playing American music.

Middle School students also have the opportunity to sing in the Middle School Chorus., which meets during an additional period.
