Upper School

Upper Music

All Upper School students are given the opportunity to both enjoy and benefit from the performing arts, regardless of skill level. Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students have a minimum of two periods per week of music and drama in which they have the chance to learn about acting, writing, and directing both for the stage and for film/video, and, in addition, participate in both vocal and instrumental musical activities which often culminate in either live or recorded performances.

The World Beat Band (open to both boys and girls in the Upper School) is a contemporary instrumental ensemble (Blues, Jazz, Rock, Latin, Funk, etc.) which often accompanies the Upper School Chorus (also open to both boys and girls) and vocal soloists. In addition, girls in the Upper School have the option of playing and singing in the MCDS Girls' Rock Band. All of these ensembles are extra curricular and often meet after school.

There are three plays presented every year in the Upper School: The Fall Play (open to seventh and eighth graders by audition only); The Winter play (also determined by audition and open to sixth graders); and the eighth grade play, a fitting conclusion to their MCDS years.
