Gardens

Lower School garden and barn

All MCDS students enjoy spending time in our three gardens. Students plant and harvest a variety of lettuce, squash, cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes and herbs. As part of our curriculum, students learn to prepare healthy snacks from the vegetables they harvest from the garden – kale chips and pumpkin bread are student favorites! Food from the gardens also appears on the salad bar at lunchtime.

Science classes use the gardens to teach about everything from the life cycle of plants to water usage. In art, students draw plants found in the gardens and harvest leaves and roots to make natural dyes. The Lower School garden also features a chicken coop. Lower Schoolers learn how to care for and feed the chickens during their many visits to the garden.
